Dr Jeff Meyers: Cancel Culture, Conflict Resolution & Forgiveness

On today’s episode of the By His Grace podcast, Misty Phillip sits down with the President of Summit Ministries, Dr. Jeff Myers, to discuss cancel culture, forgiveness, and taking challenging social media conversations offline to try to come to an understanding. We  discuss our thoughts on the Will Smith incident at the Oscars, and responding from a Biblical Worldview.

Key Takeaways

“Cancel culture started when people realized large corporations would be responsive to their audience if people, for example, signed a petition because they didn’t like a product that was made…In the age of social media, people began to turn those same tools on individuals.”

“Is it enough to say I’m sorry and then make it seem as this never happened well that’s not really a biblical approach and forgiveness isn’t that way either”

“It doesn’t allow an opportunity for people to grow.”

“Its bad for public discourse. But second of all, It is bad for individuals it shows the next generation you don’t have learn how to resolve conflicts with other people. you can just cancel them or bully them online.”

“Where is the opportunity to resolve conflict and to move forward in relationship.”

“Love God, love our neighbor.”

“Jesus said that we should forgive our enemies not just seven times, but 70 times seven, a figure that represents infinity. Forgiveness is to be the way we live, not just the words we say.”

“You always walk in forgiveness of your enemies. At every moment of everyday you walk in forgiveness. Saying I forgive you and this is over let’s pretend like it never happened is not realistic. We all have to live in the grace of repentance and forgiveness at all moments during all moments of our lives.”

“We don’t have to respond to everything. You don’t have to put online everything you think.”

Shannon Popkin: The Comparison Trap

Shannon Popkin: The Comparison Trap

Misty Phillip sits down with Shannon Popkin at the CPE – Christian Product Expo to discuss influence and comparision. Shannon is the host of Live Like It’s True podcast, and author of several amazing books. In this episode, we discuss the Kingdom of Heaven is the opposite of this world. Satan schemes to destroy us through comparison. In God’s economy, the first shall be last, and the last shall be first. Social Media exacerbates comparison. It causes us to pull away from one another by either making us feel inferior or superior. Comparing ourselves to others is a trap. Shannon uses a measuring cup analogy as an example for us to live a life poured out, instead of measuring ourselves against others.

Comparison is not good.

Comparison is dangerous.

Comparison is a thief.

Comparison steal our joy.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

“If social media is the window, it is really hard to come away from the window”

“We are better together”

“God arranges the parts of the bodily His design and gives us different gifts, different resources, different parts of our lives and he gives and fits us together not to be uniform, but united.”

“Our unity is born not of our uniformity. I need what you have, and you need what I have”

“Sideways glancing can be such a distraction”

“Emptying myself and lifting others up”

“As Christians we step up on the platform to serve”

“Jesus poured Himself”

“We are teammates”

“Stay low. Grow Slow.”

WISDOM FROM ABOVE

James 3:13-18 ESV

13 Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. 15 This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. 17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. 18 And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

Comparison Girl: Lessons from Jesus on Me-Free Living in a Measure-Up World

On social media, in the neighborhood, at church, or the school drop-off lane, do you drive yourself to prove that you measure up? Do you feel ashamed when you don’t? Measuring yourself against others isn’t healthy. And it isn’t God’s plan. In fact, the way of Jesus is completely upside down from this measure-up world. He invites us to follow him and be restored to freedom, confidence, and joy. Leave measure-up comparison behind and connect with those around you by choosing Jesus’s me-free way of living: lifting others up and pouring yourself out!

Cynthia Cavanaugh: Faithful Living for Lasting Influence

Cynthia Cavanaugh: Faithful Living for Lasting Influence

In a series of interviews conducted live from the CPE – Christian Product Expo, Misty Phillip sits down with Cynthia Cavanaugh to discuss her Bible Study, The Godly Kings of Judah:Faithful Living for Lasting Influence.

We discuss what prompted Cynthia to write this study. Cynthia loves the Old Testament, a Historical Narrative that sets up the New Testament. As she studied the Old Testament, she began questioning why the Kings documented  in 1 & 2 Chronicles and 1 & 2 Kings were falling off the rails.  Cynthia was intrigued by the Kings who wanted to live right in the eyes of the Lord. We discuss what it means to be a Godly woman of influence, and the how everyday decisions we make have a lasting impact. The study includes 7 pilliars we can build into our life. Cynthia explains the story of Hezekiah from Chapter 6 about reforming prayer.

Key Takeaways

“Decisions we make have lasting impact on generations”

“Her influence would out last her life”

“The way we live our life, and choices we make everyday”

“When we value who God is in our life, and we our secure in it, when we value His word, then our influence will have an impact.”

“Being an influencer is living out who God created me to be”

“Who is in your inner circle?”

“Being a leader is about serving people well”

What will your legacy be?

Long ago, God’s people were divided into two kingdoms. The land of Judah—with Jerusalem as its capital—was led by twenty kings, only eight of whom were good. Not even half! What does that tell you? That it’s hard to follow God to the end and leave a legacy that’s remembered well.

Bible teacher Cynthia Cavanaugh wants you to meet the good kings of Judah. The kings who earned a reputation for godliness and received the Lord’s favor. Though their names aren’t well known to us, their examples should be celebrated. Cynthia takes you deep into the Word of God, heading into the often-overlooked corners of 1-2 Kings and 1-2 Chronicles. There you will uncover these ancient rulers whose lives—full of ups and downs—have hidden lessons for us today.

In The Godly Kings of Judah, you’ll embark on an 8-week Bible study that leads you through a process of repentance, renewal, and revival. The Old Testament kings will be your companions as you fight the Lord’s battles, topple the idols that claw at our hearts, and bring reformation to the holy people of God. Don’t miss out on this exciting adventure! Because when all is said and done, you want the legacy of the godly kings to be your own as well: “She did what was right in the Lord’s eyes.”

Cynthia Cavanaugh

Cynthia believes our greatest asset is the power to influence and create space for others to flourish. Her story of brokenness has propelled her to write, speak and give voice to help others redeem their pain and heal through the pages of God’s Word. Dave Kubal: 1 Million Meals for Ukraine

Dave Kubal: 1 Million Meals for Ukraine

Misty Phillip sits down with Dave Kubal from Intercessors for America ministry organization in a series of interviews recorded during the National Religious Broadcasters media convention. Misty welcomes Dave back to the By His Grace to discuss their work with Intercessors for Ukraine.

Over a million refugees are fleeing Ukraine. A friend gave Dave the idea to deliver one million meals within 12 days from idea to food delivery. We talk about praying for Ukraine and sending 1,000,000 nutritious pre-packaged meals to war-torn Ukraine. We talk about collaborating for the Kingdom. Intercessors of America works with Intercessors for Ukraine and several other key organizations to pray and send relief to Ukraine.

About Dave Kubal

Dave Kubal is CEO/President of Intercessors for America, a massive grassroots organization uniting citizens to pray and then take action on the issues confronting America. Equipping Christians to engage and speak truth into the critical cultural debates of our day, Kubal is a nationally-recognized faith leader serving as a faith advisory member to former President Trump and on the National Day of Prayer Task Force.

With over 35 years of national ministry experience, Kubal is a seminary-trained ordained pastor and former Vice President with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Kubal has appeared on Real America’s Voice, Newsmax, Victory News, Water Cooler with David Brody, FlashPoint, NTD Television, CBN, etc. He is the author of Inspired Prayers and Fasting, published in Washington Times, Newsmax, Fox News, Stream.org, and other print and online publications. Kubal has also been a featured speaker at national conferences and events, from The Western Conservative Summit to NFL Chapels. Kubal and his family reside in the greater Washington, D.C. area.

Intercessors for America

Intercessors for America was founded in 1973. God impressed upon the hearts of a group of godly, respected men the necessity of prayer and fasting. The nation was experiencing a plethora of problems. At a teaching conference in Florida, a group of Christians focused on “prayer for the nations.” Challenged by the conference leaders Derek Prince and Ern Baxter’s fresh and extraordinary teachings, a half dozen men were chosen to steward the prayer movement and fast for the nation. This group would become Intercessors for America.

The average Christian does not have the contacts, time, or energy to keep informed about most national, state and local issues. More and more, some of these issues appear to deny our freedoms. Others undermine the basic moral fiber of our country. With each emerging concern, we need to seek God’s intervention and guidance for our leaders.

According to national studies, 83% to 90% of Christians pray weekly. As God intervenes and works in the hearts of His people, we must continue to unite and encourage believers in effective prayer and fasting for America.

God’s Word instructs us to pray regularly for those in authority over us. According to I Timothy 2:1-4:

“I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity. This is good and pleases God our Savior, who wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth.” (New Living Translation)

Intercessors for America inform, connect, and mobilize intercessors to pray for our nation and leaders. We desire to reach Christians in churches and communities nationwide with information and tools to unite them in effective prayer.

Intercessors for America Goals?

News, Prayer, & Action

  • To inform praying Christians about national, state, and local prayer concerns
  • To connect Christians moved to intercessory prayer with like-minded intercessors
  • To grow and mobilize the number of Christians regularly interceding on federal, state, and local issues

Inform, Connect, & Mobilize

To inform, connect, and mobilize intercessors, IFA publishes materials and provides the following resources from its headquarters in Purcellville, Virginia:

  • Monthly prayer letters – A First Friday Prayer Letter helps unite and focus Christians as individuals and groups in prayer and fasting. The letter is written from a biblical perspective; the letter contains timely national reports, accounts of revival and answered prayer, inspirational and informative teachings, and provides a First Friday Prayer Focus. Fasting is encouraged during the First Friday observance as a biblical way of humility and intensifying our prayers.
  • Weekly prayer alerts – The Informer is sent via e-mail three times weekly. These alerts outline critical issues in our nation’s capital and monitor foreign fronts and national emergency matters. Upon request, the alert is supplied to individuals, churches, groups, and organizations. Special alerts are also sent as needs arise.

Brittany Braswell: Faith and Intuitive Eating

Brittany Braswell: Faith and Intuitive Eating

In this episode of By His Grace, Misty Phillip sits down with Brittany Braswell, Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist (RDN), eating disorder coach, and author of Faith Over Fear.

Brittany has a passion for helping women of all ages discover their God-given worth and value. She believes that a person’s identity cannot be based on his or her appearance or abilities, but can only be found in the Lord. She is a non-diet dietitian who approaches nutrition and wellness from a holistic standpoint, focusing on four main areas of health, including physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional.

Key Takeaways

  • Starting with what you believe about food and about who you are.
  • You have to include the Lord in the process and know that you’re not grounded and you’re not identified based on your body size, that can only come from the Lord.
  • The biggest thing in improving our relationship with food is letting go of control, inviting the Lord into the process, and letting him take over.
  • It is so important for us to be in a community because when we are going through struggles they feel so very alone.
  • Do not use the words “good” and “bad” in relation to food, instead use “beneficial”. Remove comparisons and instead focus on how food can benefit you.

Hello 2022! Ebenezer & Remembrance Stones

Hello 2022! Ebenezer & Remembrance Stones

Hello 2022! Happy New Year! Welcome to season 4 of the By His Grace podcast! Misty Phillip is back to kick off the first episode of 2022 and she is flying solo in this episode of By His Grace to talk about the year ahead, walking into the new year in intention, how her word of the year has helped clarify the year ahead, and the importance of an Ebenezer & Remembrance Stones.

Key Takeaways

“I believe the space between the microphone and You the listener is holy ground, and I do not take that responsibility lightly.”

“I pray with each guest that comes on the show and we consecrate the episode to the Lord asking him to give us the words that you need to hear.”

“I’m also passionate about equiping other faith based podcasters to share messages of hope through Spark Media. Where we empower faith-based podcasters through events, the Spark Collective a thriving training membership community, the Spark Media podcast network, and the Spark Media magazine.”

“He takes our meager offering and our humble YES and does with it far abundantly then all that we can ask or think!”

“One of the things that is really helped me to cast a vision for this year is my one word.”

“I don’t know about you but that brings me comfort. No matter what 2022 has in store for us the Lord is with us, and He is faithful.”

Spark Media

For the Spark Media conference, we  are partnering with the NRB the National Religious BroadcastersMedia Convention again this year to combine two amazing events under one roof on March 7-8 at the Gaylord Opryland in Nashville, TN. The NRB runs March 8-11, and this year I’ll be speaking at the NRB and conducting interviews. We have a stellar line-up of speakers and an incredible group of attendees God is bringing together for Spark conference and Spark Media award ceremony this year.  All of the things I’m mentioning about SPARK media can be found at the SparkMedia.Ventures website.

Last year we launched two exciting projects the Spark Media Podcast network and the Spark Media magazine. We created both of these ventures to amplify the voice of Christian podcasters and provide opportunities for podcast growth and discovery. We are working on our third edition of the magazine now and can’t wait for y’all to see it. This is definitely a labor of love, but I so enjoy providing space to highlight the gifts and talents of my friends who are doing incredible work in the faith-based podcasting space. Not only that but I am blown away by the incredible partnerships we’ve formed with organizations like pray.com, the Bible minute app, Samaritan’s purse and the Edifi podcast app. Only God y’all. He takes our meager offering and our humble YES and does with it far abundantly than all that we can ask or think!

Word of The Year

This year I’ve put a lot of thoughtful prayer into my word.  2021- Dream, 2020- Spark, Advocate-2019, Presence- 2018, and in Contentment – 2017. I’ve looked at definitions and scriptures, prayed and sought the Lord. But instead of ending up with one word, I ended up with three.

Wisdom, Alignment, and Faithful

Wisdom is defined as knowledge of what is true or right coupled with just judgment.  Ephesians 5:15-16 says, “be very careful then how you live not as unwise but as wise making the most of every opportunity because the days are evil.” This verse struck a chord with me because of the crazy days that we are living in. I’ve always been a very intentional person but this year I feel compelled to be super intentional with everything I’m doing.

The next word, that I felt was critical for this year is Alignment.

Alignment is defined as a potential statement of agreement or cooperation among persons, groups and nations with a common cause or viewpoint. I found it interesting that one of the verses that I looked up based off the word alignment was Psalm 16:3 says, “Commit your works to the Lord and your plans will be established.” It’s my hearts desire to continue to lock arms with others who are passionate about kingdom work and making Jesus known. The third word I’ve chosen is Faithful.

Faithful is defined as true to one’s promises.

Proverbs 31:26- she opens her mouth with wisdom and faithful instruction is on her tongue. As a Podcaster, I don’t want to just speak into the air I want my words to be filled with meaning and purpose, to edify, to build up, to be life giving and God honoring.

This word also reminds me about how faithful God has been to us in the past and how no matter what comes our way this year that he will be faithful.

Stones of Remembrance

“After the people of Israel supernaturally crossed the Jordan River to enter the Promised Land, God commanded Joshua to “choose twelve men, one from each tribe. Tell them, ‘Take twelve stones from the very place where the priests are standing in the middle of the Jordan. Carry them out and pile them up at the place where you will camp tonight’” (Joshua 4:2–3, NLT). These stones of remembrance would serve as a permanent national reminder and a memorial to future generations of the miraculous river crossing.

Joshua’s stones of remembrance are just one monument in a series of memorials commemorating the mighty acts of God on behalf of the people of Israel (Exodus 13:3–6; 24:4; Deuteronomy 27:1–8; Joshua 22:9–12; 24:24–28; 1 Samuel 7:12). To everyone else, the stones were just a heap of rubble, but to the people of God, they were a constant reminder that Yahweh was a personal and powerful God, working wonders on behalf of His people.” Got Questions, Remembrance Stones.

Ebenezer

“The name “Ebenezer” actually comes from the Bible. In 1 Samuel 7, during the end of the time of the judges, Israel experiences revival under the leadership of Samuel. The nation repents of their sin, destroys their idols, and begins to seek the Lord (1 Samuel 7:2–4). Samuel gathered the people at Mizpah where they confessed their sin, and Samuel offered a sacrifice on their behalf (verses 5–9).It was during this time of repentance and renewal that the enemy attacked: “While Samuel was sacrificing the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to engage Israel in battle” (1 Samuel 7:10). The Israelites went out to do battle against the invaders, and God sent them supernatural help: “That day the LORD thundered with loud thunder against the Philistines and threw them into such a panic that they were routed before the Israelites” (verse 10).

Israel’s victory over the Philistines was decisive. Several cities the Philistines had captured were restored to Israel, and it was a long time before the Philistines tried to invade Israel again (1 Samuel 7:13–14). To commemorate the divine victory, “Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer, saying, ‘Thus far the LORD has helped us’” (verse 12).

Ebenezer means “stone of help.” From then on, every time an Israelite saw the stone erected by Samuel, he would have a tangible reminder of the Lord’s power and protection. The “stone of help” marked the spot where the enemy had been routed and God’s promise to bless His repentant people had been honored. The Lord had helped them, all the way to Ebenezer.” – Got Questions, Ebenezer

Lyrics to Just as Good by Chris Renezema featuring Ellie Hollocomb.

“And I will build an altar And stack it stone by stone Cause every Ebeneezer says I’ve never been alone. My faith will surely falter. But that don’t change what You’ve done. Cause every Ebeneezer points to where my help comes from” after listening to this song I went back to got questions and looked at the word Ebeneezer and this is what I found.

Misty Phillip sits down with her husband Peter Phillip, the By His Grace podcast producer, to discuss 2021, a year in review, on this episode of the By His Grace podcast.

Misty shares her thoughts about 2021 by opening the episode with a quote from Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities.

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.”

Peter’s thoughts about 2021. “It was 2020, but slightly better, and slightly worse.” some of the lows were worse, and some on the highs were better.” “We did some amazingly cool things with Spark.”

Revived & Renovated

Revived & Renovated

Hey friends, It has been a hot minute since I’ve posted anything on the blog. Anyone who has been around me for any length of time knows that I am passionate about faith and home. Still, when the opportunity came up for me to review Revived & Renovated: Real Conversations on the Intersection of Home, Faith, and Everything in Between by Victoria Duerstock and Paige Rien, I couldn’t resist the chance.

Something you may not know about me is my passion for restoring old things and giving them new life. When I discovered Annie Sloan’s paint, it became my new best friend. I loved that I could take an old dinghy piece of furniture and give it new life. Too often, in our modern world, we toss out the old to make room for the new. If something is broken, we toss it and buy a new one. This got me thinking about why I love repurposing so much. Maybe it’s because before I knew Christ, I was a broken mess, but through Christ, I’ve been redeemed and restored. Not only that, but He has restored to me the years the eaten by the locusts.

“I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten,
the hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter, my great army, which I sent among you. “You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord your God, who has dealt wondrously with you.
And my people shall never again be put to shame.” – Joel 2:25-26

The first thing that caught my attention was the title revived and renovated. I love that each chapter begins with the letter R. I don’t know about you, but I am a sucker for good alliteration.

Revived & Renovated: Real Conversations on the Intersection of Home, Faith, and Everything in Between perfectly dovetails meaningful conversations with scripture coupled with practical tips on real projects to progress in the home. From post-covid feelings to vulnerability, super mom complex, and the connection to our homes. I really enjoyed reading Revived & Renovated and highly recommend.

Some of my favorite quotes.

“Restoration isn’t reinvention. No tears downs, no starting over. Surely God works this way as well. So much of our work with God is a return – to old wounds and to His word and to the original promises to His people.”

“We may not feel energized; we don’t feel useful. And God promises to restore to us the joy of our salvation – which is just beautiful.”

“We avoid being still because busyness feels better.”

“The message of “you can do it all” is so bad for us.”

Revived & Renovated is a conversation on well-loved topics between two great friends.

Victoria and Paige delight in all the dovetails found among the parallels of the work we do in our homes and our souls. Covering topics of home renovation with corresponding Biblical wisdom and perspectives from their personal walks with God, Revived and Renovated will be an encouragement to young and old alike.

Victoria Duerstock

“A multi-passionate creative and entrepreneur fueled mostly by coffee, Victoria Duerstock pursues her dreams with verve and intensity. Wife and mom of three, Victoria divides and conquers the never-ending to-do list while working to maintain her sanity and pleasant demeanor.”

Paige Rien

“When I was working in television, on HGTV’s “Hidden Potential” for five seasons, to be exact, I found out I had way too much to say for TV. I had more to say about making home and making it personal and unique, than time slots between commercial breaks would allow. I have always loved making spaces mine. I can remember at Girl Scout Camp, rearranging the furniture. I can recall how I decorated my first apartment in alarming detail. I am passionate about bringing personal stories to spaces – not just things”
