Live. Save. Spend. Repeat.

Live. Save. Spend. Repeat.

My husband can always tell when I read a new book that excites me because I instantly start implementing ideas from the book! I don’t know about you but I love a good bargain, saving money excites me, and living a life of intention and purpose is right up my alley. I tend to talk a lot about intentional living here on By His Grace.

Which is why I was thrilled to have the opportunity to review the book, Live. Save. Spend. Repeat.: The Life You Want With The Money You Have by Kim Anderson.

The book is divided into three parts:  LIVE, SAVE, SPEND

LIVE

In this section, Kim shares some thoughts on what holds people back, and you’ll get an idea of your financial picture, including what type of spender and saver you are. The book includes several worksheets to create a budget to help you become more intentional with your money, along with thrifty little tips.

SAVE

This section gets into the nitty-gritty of saving through planning, patience, and persistence, and helps you think through your goals and track your goals and dreams through momentum milestone exercises so that you can start living the life you really want today! Filled with fear bursting encouragement, Kim helps you create both financial goals and other life goals by creating momentum milestones for all areas of your life.

SPEND

I love this part because it talks about ways to strategically spend your money so that you can spend without regret! Along with helpful ideas to make sure that you are being intentional with your money.

If you are tired of the cycles of work, spend, worry, repeat, then this book is definitely for you! Be sure to visit my Instagram where I am giving away a copy of Live. Save. Spend. Repeat.: The Life You Want With The Money You Have and leave a comment on the post with this picture.

Kim and her husband paid off $93,000 in debt in two years on one income, and I couldn’t wait to hear her strategies for saving money. You can learn more about Kim Anderson and find even more create saving ideas at her blog: Thrifty Little Mom.

A special thank you to Kim Anderson, Harvest House Publishers, and The Blog About network for providing me with a copy of Live. Save. Spend. Repeat.: The Life You Want With The Money You Have to review and one to give away.

Welcome to By His Grace!

Welcome to By His Grace!

Hey friend,

I am so glad you are here. I am a woman who is passionate about encouraging women to live authentically for Jesus! On this blog, you will find encouragement and pearls of wisdom to help you navigate the twists and turns of life.

I named this blog By His Grace because I am a woman in desperate need of the grace, that can only come from Jesus.  The tagline I chose for my blog is: seek Jesus, study the word, and grow in grace. When we seek Jesus, we find Him, and as we study His word, and grow in grace, we become more like Him. Spending time with Jesus studying His word has been the one thing that has brought about the most change in my life.

Jesus Christ has profoundly impacted my life and brought me through many difficult seasons of life, and along with those deep wounds, Jesus has shown me deep grace. My desire is for you to find something here to encourage you on your journey and that you will know without a shadow of a doubt that no matter what you are going through Jesus sees you right where you are and His love is great for you, friend!

Much Love, Misty

Wisdom for Parenting Teens & Young Adults

Wisdom for Parenting Teens & Young Adults

Parenting teens and young adults are challenging, can I get a witness? I just thought parenting little people was tough, but that was the easy job. Little people want to please and pretty much do what you tell them to do, but when they get older and can make choices for themselves, it gets much trickier to navigate as a parent. I don’t claim to have all the answers, and I can’t give you a guaranteed formula that works.

I simply offer some wisdom that I have gleaned over the past 25 years of parenting in hopes that it will help you too!

Start Early -Parenting older kids really begins when they are very young. Teach your child to walk with the Lord at a very early age. Establish boundaries and be consistent. Show them love and respect. Teach them right from wrong, and model for them how to walk. Children are far more likely to do what they see us do, then do what we tell them to do.

Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.– Proverbs 22:6

Open Communication– How well do you really know your kids? Do you know what has the affections of your young person’s heart? Do you have their heart? Do they share their hearts with you?

Be genuine with your kids.

Keeping lines of communication open with your young people is of the utmost importance. Our kids need to know that they can trust us with their thoughts, feelings, and emotions without judgment. Keeping lines of communication open is critical. When our eldest son was in college he lived at home with us and commuted to the University. Since young people are night owls, this made for many late night conversations, but these conversations were critical. Our kids need to know that they can come to us.

Our kids need to know that they can trust us with their thoughts, feelings, and emotions without judgment.

Keeping lines of communication open is critical. When our eldest son was in college he lived at home with us and commuted to the University, and this made for many late night conversations, but these conversations were critical. Our kids need to know that they can come to us when they have problems, need counsel or make mistakes.

Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life. – Proverbs 4:23

Be Involved – We have to be involved in their lives. Life is hectic, and we can get caught up in living, but we can’t just go on auto-pilot with them as they grow. We need to know who their friends with and what their character is like. We become most like those we hang around with, so we need to help them choose their friends wisely.

Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.” – 1 Corinthians 15:33 ESV

In the digital age, it is essential to know how they spend their time online, and you need to make sure that you are monitoring those activities carefully. Know who they are associated with, what app’s they are using, and where they are spending their time online and how much time they are spending inline. Limiting use and making course corrections over time as needed.

Pray without Ceasing – This goes without saying but is probably the most important thing we can do for our teens and young adults. The enemy would like nothing more than to deceive our kids. He is cunning and sneaky and attacks us at our weakest moments. Covering our children in prayer at every age is vital, especially when they beginning driving or as they fly from the nest. It is an honor and privilege to pray for our children, and one we should not take for granted.

It is an honor and privilege to pray for our children, and one we should not take for granted. Pray bold specific prayers for your kids, and keep them continually covered in prayer.

Rejoice always,  pray without ceasing,  give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. – Thessalonians 5:16-18 ESV

Let Go – Let go and let God. Once we have done our job, it is time for us to release them to the Lord’s care. This is a lot easier said than done, but it is the natural order of things.

I wrote about this in a previous post,  Learning to Let Go,  I wrote, “How do you love them with every fiber of your being and then simply just let go? By entrusting them to the care of Jesus. I will always be their mother, and no matter how old they are, they will always be my little boys, but I need to let them go so that they can become the men God created them to be.”

Raising productive responsible young adults really begins by training them from a very young age in how they should walk, it requires us to keep open lines of communication and be available to talk to them at all hours of the day and night. Continually monitoring and involvement in their lives while they are living under our roofs, so that we can make corrections before they drift too far afield. Then when we have done all that we can do to raise them well, we fervently pray for them and let go and entrust them to Jesus.

Withdraw to a Quiet Place: Finding Peace for a Weary Soul

Withdraw to a Quiet Place: Finding Peace for a Weary Soul

Life is a lot like a roller coaster ride filled with excitement a little scary and when you least expect it you soar sky high then plunge down into great depths followed by a series of twists and turns. Last week was quite a ride for me!

My week began at a gathering of women to pray, worship and hear a word of encouragement. The evening was orchestrated intentionally to invite us into the presence of the Lord in a very tangible way. Between praising with my arms outstretched wide and my soul eager for a touch from God, I hit the floor and cried out to Jesus to do what only he could do for me. Little did I know at the time how desperately I needed that time.

Valentine’s day is sandwiched in between my mom’s birthday and Peter’s mom’s birthday which made it super convenient to remember their birthdays when they were alive. But now that they are gone it makes for a somber week of remembrance.

On Valentine’s Day, I sent my first manuscript off to the editor for review. Releasing a book to someone is much like birthing a baby. It is a labor of love filled but comes with all kinds of emotions. Since my manuscript was due on Wednesday, we decided to celebrate on Friday evening. My husband Peter and I had a transcendent evening gazing at one another in love celebrating 25 years of Valentine’s Days together, complete with the best meal I think I have ever eaten in my entire life.

Thrown in with the gamut of highs and lows this week was regular life stuff, like dishes, laundry, school, work, grocery shopping, meals, exercise and shuttling kids.

Sometimes it is hard to find space to grieve or rest in this crazy world we live in, but it is crucial for our souls to find peace and solace to make sense of life. Making time to escape the daily grind and get alone with God to pray is imperative. Even Jesus had to break away from the crowds and get alone so he could pray.

But he would withdraw to desolate places and pray. Luke 5:16 ESV

Rounding out the end of this week I had the pleasure of gathering with a group of women in my home who are walking through different seasons in life, some are going through deep waters and others who feel like a mess and are in need of a special touch from the Lord. We have all been there. We are all busy, so we compartmentalize the problematic stuff and keep moving on. Life is hard and at times it can be soul crushing!

I looked one woman straight in the eyes and told her what I wish someone would have been brave enough to say to me at various times in my life when things were spinning out of control and I felt like a complete mess. “Go get flat on your face before the Lord and pray and don’t get up until you have peace because He is the only one who can change you!”

As women, we lead hectic lives often caring for everyone but ourselves. Although, we can’t care for anyone else well if we don’t first make time to get alone to a quiet place and do the soul work necessary to care for ourselves.

Cast your cares friend, because He cares for you!

My Word for 2018 and a Gift for You!

It is the second week of January, how are you doing with your resolutions and plans for 2018? This year I decided to be kind to myself and ease into the New Year, you can learn more about that in my  Happy New Year!. After a hectic holiday season, and wanting to linger in the remaining days of 2017, I had no choice. 2018 came in with a roar!

Through prayer and thoughtful meditation with the Lord, one word has come up over and over, and I believe it is my one word for 2018. Presence not to be confused with presents, although it can be a gift.

My first encounter with the word presence came as I was reading through the book of Jonah. Jonah is more than just a story of a man and a big fish. Jonah is the story of a man with a calling on his life who tries to run away from his destiny and hide from God.

Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,  “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it, for their evil has come up before me.” But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. – Jonah 1:1-3 ESV

Jonah gets a word from God.  God doesn’t need Jonah to fulfill his plan, but the Lord graciously chooses to use Jonah to fulfill his divine purposes. How cool is that? Jonah knows exactly what his calling is and why he is here on this earth!  And what does Jonah do? He runs the other way! He tries to flee the very presence of the Lord.

Does he think there is a place he can go where the Lord can’t find him? Maybe a more poignant question would be… do we think we can run and hide from God?

Psalm 139:8 is clear,

If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!

Hiding from God is a futile exercise, HE is intimately acquainted with us. He sees our heart and knows our sin. We can’t run and we can’t hide!

Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the LORD your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you. – Deuteronomy 31:6 ESV

God is with us. Our Heavenly Father lavishly loves us and is ever present in our lives.  I don’t ever want to take that for granted. Instead, I want to fully embrace my calling but in order to do that first.

[ctt template=”2″ link=”k899y” via=”yes” ]I have to spend time with the Lord in order to get a word from the Lord.[/ctt]

Find theBeard that Suits You-2

Presence

Before I can pour out my cup to anyone, my husband, my children, my neighbors, friends or blog readers my cup must be filled first by the only one who can fulfill the deepest longings within my soul, so that I have something to share with others. This requires me to linger in the presence of the most Holy and be filled.

Over and over the word, presence kept coming up. And questions filled my mind.

  • How often am I distracted during my quiet time?
  • When I am with others am I fully present, or am I thinking about something else?
  • Where am I in this present moment? Am I fully here?

Am I distracted by the device in my hand, or am I present with the ones I love.

The Antonym of Presence

Absence is the opposite of presence. If I am praying and my mind wonders I am absent. If I am having dinner with my family and we are all mindlessly scrolling on our phones than I am absent. If I am talking with a friend, but thinking about my to-do list, then I am most certainly absent!

[ctt template=”2″ link=”_7Z8h” via=”yes” ]I am choosing to spend more time in the presence of Jesus in 2018![/ctt]

Sometimes in order to be more present, we must be careful to choose our absence, as I was so gently reminded today by Emily P Freeman on her podcast The Next Right Thing. I may have to let go of good things, in order to have time for the best things.

My desire for this year is to be aware of my presence and to live intentionally and with purpose. Choosing to linger long in the Word of God focusing my prayers and meditations. Being fully present wherever I am, whether it is in my quiet time, with my family or a friend.

What is your prayer for the New Year?

My hope for the new year is that my Presence will bring me to new victorious heights with the Lord in 2018.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

Hey friends, Happy New Year I hope your new year is off to a great start! Did you make resolutions? What are your dreams for the new year? Have you made any plans yet? I am easing into the New Year showing myself some kindness and grace after a very hectic holiday season. My husband just went back to work, and I am still trying to get my house back together and get rid of the glitter. SO MUCH GLITTER.

I love the fullness Christmas adds to my home, but when I take everything down and put it away my house feels empty. For me, this is an excellent time to evaluate our possessions, purge the clutter in my home and the things I no longer love to make room for the new stuff we added over the holidays. The perfect time to refresh and rearrange my house for the upcoming season.

This is also a great time to dream, plan, pray and prepare for the new year. I am devoting time to do this over the next couple of weeks as our routine returns to normal to pray and plan for 2018. To purge things from my life and my soul that need to go, and to make room for the new things God wants to do in my life in 2018. Last year, I wrote about my one word for 2017 Contentment, and Do you have a Scripture of the Year?

As of right now, I don’t have any goals or resolutions written down, not one word, or even a scripture for the year, but what I do have is a desire to experience more of God’s presence in my life in 2018.

Last year our family experienced many wonderful milestones, but with it came a degree of difficulty and pain. In those difficult moments, it was a challenge to laugh at the future and be contentment. The one that remained true in 2017 was that God loves me, he hears my prayers, and is intimately acquainted with my sorrows.  Although he also delights to answer our prayers and sometimes in the most unexpected ways.

The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps. – Proverbs 16:9 ESV

I want the Lord to guide me and direct me to do the things that he wants me to do in 2018. My year did not start the way I thought or planned it would. Sometimes we make plans, but God has planned interruptions to get our attention or teach us something new.

My interruption came in the form of a winter storm that is blowing across the United States right now and that threatened a hard freeze where I live in Texas. My son and I went out at dark to brave the cold, and the sleet to pick as many oranges as we could from our orange tree, before we lost them all to frost.

fullsizeoutput_26f2

We ended up with an entire clothing basket full of oranges, and this is after we have already picked tons of oranges and shared them with others. God provided an abundance of oranges for us to harvest this year. And isn’t that just like to God to provide a bountiful harvest, but we do not see that harvest until a seed has been planted, watered, pruned, and fertilized.

What a beautiful lesson for the new year. If I want to reap a harvest, first I have to sow a seed. Or maybe it is my job to come alongside someone else and water a seed that has already been planted.

“I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth.” – 1 Corinthians 3:6 ESV

What will we do this year with the gifts and talents he has given us this year?

When we humble ourselves before God and take our meager offering of our lives to Him and we leave it at his feet, it is up to him to guide, direct, anoint and bless.  Our job is to faithfully seek him and plant seeds, but he is the one that causes growth.

When we humble ourselves before God and take our meager offering of our lives to Him and we leave it at his feet, it is up to him to guide, direct, anoint and bless.  Our job is to faithfully seek him and plant seeds, but he is the one that causes growth.

I spent the day yesterday peeling oranges, juicing, and making jars filled with citrus vinegar to clean my home. You see we can be given a bounty, but will we be good stewards of that harvest? Once I picked the fruit I needed to do something with it, or it would rot. So I got busy giving away more fruit and finding other ways that I could utilize the bounty I’ve been given.

As believers, we have all been entrusted with the gospel. Are we going to keep it for ourselves or will we give it away? Our world is in need of hope. My challenge to you this year is to shine your light brighter in 2018 then you did in 2017. Seek the presence of God while he may be found. Plant lots of seeds and watch the LORD bring the harvest. I am praying for a bountiful harvest for you in 2018 and look forward to what the Lord has planned for us this year. If you need some inspiration, check this post on Choosing to be Thankful & Sowing A Pocketful of Seeds.

Leave a comment on your one word, or scripture for 2018. I would love to know what your goals and dreams for the new year or how you plan to sow seeds and share your light with the world.

Holiday-Giveaway

My first e-book was published through By His Grace and given away for free to blog subscribers, and I continued to write and edit my first Bible Study, and craft a book proposal all while homeschooling my boys, running a household, doing life and planning a wedding. My first born son moved out, graduated from college and got married.

At home, I planned several birthday parties and other large gatherings in our house, including opening our home on Thanksgiving to families affected by Hurricane Harvey and those who might otherwise be alone. I loved hosting my mastermind group and collaborating with other local authors and bloggers and seeing God move in our midst.

Other highlights of my year also included modeling for a fashion video with Fashion Meets Faith, traveling to San Jose, California with my husband for the Apple Conference, and a much-needed vacation with my boys to North Carolina, and Tennesse where we visited with dear friends. We also explored the Charlotte area including a visit to my cousin’s organic farm, Elevation worship, and the Billy Graham library. We absolutely loved visiting Asheville, NC, the Biltmore Mansion, touring Nashville and the smoky mountains.

10. Move Toward the Mess

In January I shared the book Move Toward the MessThe Ultimate Fix for a Boring Christian Life and simultaneously God orchestrated a service day to a local soup kitchen in Downtown Houston called Loaves and Fishes. This was a life-changing experience for me. There are so many lost and hurting people in this world that need hope, and the good news of Jesus Christ, and if we are willing to leave our comfort zones God will take us on the ride of a lifetime!

8. Wisdom for My Son as You Graduate

My eldest son graduated from college this year. As a parent, my greatest joy is to know that my boys are walking with the Lord, and everything else is just icing on the cake. In this post, I challenge my son to seek wisdom and to love the Lord God with all his heart and to love others. No matter where the road of life takes him, I wanted him to know that he is never alone that God Loves him and that He will never leave my son or forsake him.

7. Why Didn’t Anyone Tell Me About Jesus

This post tells the amazing story of my friend who passionately loves Jesus and didn’t come to know him until adulthood. She wondered how she could have lived her whole life not knowing him, and why no one had ever shared the gospel message with her. What a beautiful reminder to us to share the good news with others.

6. This Is Us-When Life Gives You Lemons

This show wrecks me everytime I watch it! I was hooked from the very first episode. In this post, I share one of the most painful moments in my life and relate it to the show This is Us. Life is uncertain, but your life is what you make of it. So if life gives you lemons, make lemonade!

1. 3 Things to do when we are deeply wounded by others

This was the # 1 post on By His Grace this year by a landslide! I think it resonates with people because we have all been hurt by others. This was written after a time of deep hurt and betrayal in my life, but after much prayer, this is how God showed me to bring resolution to my situation.

Well thats a wrap for 2017. Blessings to you as you  plan, pray and prepare for 2018. May we all seek to love the Lord and others more, and grow in grace in the New Year!

Many Blessings & Much Love,  Misty

Christmas Traditions

Making memories with family and sharing traditions is one of my favorite parts of the holidays! There are some traditions we celebrate that have been passed down through the years, and other traditions that we have added to our family over the years. Some traditions have been modified or stopped altogether as our boys have grown, but there are many special times that we look forward to each year.

For example, when the boys were little we used always get a fresh cut real tree, and hunting for just the right tree was part of the fun and a family tradition we looked forward to every year. One year we added an artificial tree, and the rest was history. We found that we could put up an artificial tree or trees, I think we are up to 9 or 10 now,  much earlier and enjoy them longer without the hassle of having to water them, continually sweep up pine needles and battle allergy flare-ups.

shutterstock_783684

Christmas Eve has always been an important day for our family! When I was a girl growing up I have fond memories of going to Christmas Eve service and the anticipation of Christmas morning. When Peter and I married, Peter’s mom began the tradition of celebrating with them by sharing special snacks, frozen drinks, games and lively conversations on Christmas Eve and we celebrated this tradition for many years.

As our circumstances changed Christmas Eve changed to fit the needs of our family. One year when Peter’s dad was really sick and in the hospital, we ate hamburgers at the restaurant of the hotel that was attached to the hospital. That was a very different Christmas Eve, yet we were all together. Another year my mom was hospitalized and on life support. Christmas Eve changed again that year too and has never quite been the same since Peter’s mom passed away a couple of weeks before Christmas another year. Since then we have started new Christmas Eve traditions with our boys that we look forward to every year.

Here are some of the holiday time traditions that we have enjoyed over the years.

  • Attending Candlelight Service
  • Celebrating Advent
  • Baking Cookies
  • Making Gingerbread Houses
  • Retelling the Christmas Story by making parts of the nativity out of playdough
  • Visiting Christmas Tree farms and cutting down our own trees
  • Shopping for Christmas decorations on Thanksgiving night
  • Table time telling stories with the family
  • Reading aloud the story of the birth of Jesus
  • Reading aloud the Christmas Carol or other beloved stories
  • Watching Family Favorite Christmas Movies
  • Christmas Musicals
  • Christmas Parties
  • Driving around looking at Christmas Lights

Celebrating family traditions helps bind the family ties together. Christmas traditions may adapt and change over time from year to year based on your family circumstances and that is okay. They should be a source of enjoyment and something you look forward to, not drudgery. So if something doesn’t work for your family drop or change it.

shutterstock_519319516

If watching movies is a holiday favorite for you to then I have a special treat for you! I recently learned about Pure Flix and some great things they have going on for free in hopes of helping families start new traditions. Pure Flix has free holiday movies the whole family can enjoy this season! They have made it super easy to watch them too! No need to enter your credit card information, all you need is your name and email. As a bonus, they also offer educational movie options for kids during their Christmas vacation, Pure Flix also has homeschool resources available.

fullsizeoutput_25a7

Whatever you do this Christmas Season, my prayer is that you enjoy making your own special family traditions and that the gift of Jesus Christ who came to save the world rules in your heart and minds.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.  For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. – John 3:16-17 ESV

I would love to hear from you about the traditions you and your family enjoy! Leave a comment sharing your favorite family traditions or new ones you would like to start this year. Hope you have a very Merry Christmas and a blessed New year too!
